Concept Versioning 4 Months, 2 Weeks ago
|
|
|
We have begun brainstorming versioning of concepts and would like feedback from our users.
Tell us how you would like it to work.

OH MAN, that just made my day.. versioning.. such a lovely word.
Questions & thoughts
-we would need easy access to one review back to confirm or QA items... would we click on a versions link from the arrow to launch a mini popup listing all the versions.
-all comments would have to be associated with the specific version (so as not to confuse) but should always be a part of the print summary.
-How would approvals go? would version #s automatically be added and then added to the approvals?
-if someone got an old version link for approval in their email (and they were behind) would they be brought back to that previous version?
-are previous versions automatically locked to prevent additional comments being added, or is that a manual thing?

-We have envisioned accessing the versioning from the concept options arrow, correct.
-Correct, when a new concept is added and 'versioned' the comments with the old one is archived with it.
-Correct, version numbers would be added to the concepts, and included in the approvals if they were versioned.
-If they clicked on a link of a concept which was achieved for versioning. It would load the latesy concept, and no approval needed unless you re-requested it for the latest.
-Correct, old versions are just for reference, no editing of any kind would be made.

This would be excellent as some of our projects (especially web designs) become incredibly difficult to manage. Folders help to a degree, but it becomes a lot for us (and our clients) to sift through.
Combined with Basecamp integration, versioning would greatly improve our workflow.

Versioning for us would simply require a 'block' of some kind on previous versions of the files and more importantly, visibility of folder contents. It would be very straight forward if we could lock a folder (similar to what is done with concepts), only locking the folder would prevent ConceptShare from displaying its contents in the Concepts window. Phew. Administrators would be able to unlock the folder and display it for clients / production members whenever needed. I should note that we place versions in folders aptly named Originals, Version 001, Version 002, etc.
One advantage to this is that workspaces would not be limited to only the current version and one back. Complete access would be available to all versions, including comments and markups. The block-view feature would keep a clean house so-to-speak.
At least from our perspective (post production - 2D, 3D, Video) the simpler we can keep things the better it is for ourselves and our clients.
